Ronny Chieng
Ronny Chieng,
born 21 November 1985 in Malaysia is a comedian and actor. Chieng is currently
the senior correspondent of The Daily Show on Comedy Central. He also produced
and starred in the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student, which premiered
on ABC Australia (Australia) in the year 2017. Chieng was born to a Malaysian
Chinese couple in Johor Bahru (Malaysia). Chieng was brought up in Singapore
and in the United States. He lived in Manchester, New Hampshire, from 1989 until
1994. Chieng performed with Trevor Noah at a Melbourne comedy festival in 2013.
Chieng was asked to audition for The Daily Show's correspondent position two
years after. He was named one of the top 10 comics to watch in the July issue
of Variety. In October, Chieng joined The Daily Show to discuss the
controversial Jesse Watters Fox News segment that was widely viewed as racist.
Chieng was known for his expletive-laden remarks about the segment of Fox News,
a conservative news network. He also visited the city's Chinatown. Watters had
mocked the Chinese residents and gave respectful interviews in Mandarin Chinese
and Cantonese. The video went viral and was featured by the Washington Post,
Slate, as well as other media outlets. Chieng was a Singapore Sea Scout during
his youth. Chieng hasn't been able to get citizenship or permanent residency
status in Australia despite living in Australia for ten years. In 2018, Chieng
made a joke about being an apologist during the Daily Show however, he later
stated in an interview that Chieng was "100 per cent not scared of
dogs".
